Are they Immigrants or Migrant Workers #1
Are they immigrants? Are they Migrant Workers? Do they want to assimilate and become Americans? Are they illegal immigrants? Are they undocumented aliens? Are they just political pawns?
IN THE BEGINNING: After the 1848 Mexican-American war many thousands of Mexican workers set up temporary homes in America and after the crops were harvested moved back to Mexico. From the 1870’s through 1918 farming became big business, there was not enough Mexican workers and Black American’s moved into other industry so the U.S. brought workers from China, Japan and the Philippines in such large numbers that eventually 7 out of 8 farm workers were from Asia. During WWI immigrants from Europe declined so the first guest worker program was established. During WWII there was a worker shortage so Mexican migrant workers were allowed to increase to fill the work shortage gap. In Florida the sugar cane growers imported workers from the Caribbean. (NOTE: The concept of bringing workers from other countries is not new)
TODAY: Black Americans moved into other industries so the H-2A seasonal guest workers program was established. The majority of these workers are from Mexico and Central America.
UNDOCUMENTED OR ILLEGAL: Some say they are undocumented and some say that they are illegal. (Q: If you are undocumented and entered the country without the proper paperwork does that not mean that you are in the country illegally therefore an illegal alien?) The number of illegal aliens in the U.S. range from 70 to 75% depending on your source. Added to this is that now almost 70% of these illegal aliens have remained in the U.S. for over 10 years.
HUMAN BEINGS: Never forget that these undocumented or illegal aliens are people just like you and me. They have families, they go to church, they laugh and cry, they raise families, and they have hopes and dreams just like all people. Yes there is a human element.
AMERICA NEEDS WORKERS: One big lobby group for these migrant workers is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. These guest migrant workers perform domestic duties in the home, work on farms, lawn care etc.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM: Are we a sovereign nation and a nation of laws? If you answer yes to that question then you must agree that all people in the U.S. must be documented. (NOTE: There are false stories claiming that Eisenhower and other presidents deported many millions of Mexicans, NOT TRUE.) Every president in recent history has deported illegal aliens. The key operative word is illegal or undocumented which is essentially the same thing. But we are talking about people not trees, so what to do?
AMNESTY FOR EVERYONE: (“I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though some time back they may have entered illegally,” Ronald Reagan said in 1984.) The Simpson-Mazzoll Act signed by President Reagan November 6, 1986, gave amnesty to 3 Million illegal aliens that came to the U.S. prior to 1982. This bill was a failure because a big part of the legislation was that there was to be strict sanctions on employers that hired illegal aliens, but that was stripped out of the bill. The reality is that even if it had been put in, the next batch of politicians could have stripped it out, so America needs something more permanent.
THE WALL: Currently there is about 600 miles of border fence in place and the total length of the border is 1,989 miles between Mexico and the United States. In 1989 there were 15 border walls around the world, and in 2016 there will be 70, so a wall is not a new concept. There are several reasons to construct a border wall. Many people cry that it is not humane, it’s evil and is hateful (this is the one world no borders crowd). Building a complete wall that is properly monitored and patrolled with specific locations for people that wish to enter the United States clearly identified will be better for everyone. America can control who enters and is given a work permit etc. Most important is the humanitarian aspect. Since the year 2000 to October 2014 almost 6,000 migrants died. We owe it to those people and their families to build the wall.
